Inspirational Quote: Hamilton Wright Mabie “Honorable Success”

HamiltonWrightMabie Inspirational Quote: Hamilton Wright Mabie Honorable Success"The question for each man to settle is not what he would do if he had means, time, influence and educational advantages; the question is what he will do with the things he has. The moment a young man ceases to dream or to bemoan his lack of opportunities and resolutely looks his conditions in the face, and resolves to change them, he lays the corner-stone of a solid and honorable success."

Best Ways To Care For Your Health While In College

healthy weight loss Best Ways To Care For Your Health While In CollegeFreedom! Tasting if for the first time can be so sweet. Whether you’re commuting from home or living away for the first time, college is probably the first time in your life when your schedule is almost, if not entirely, your own!

Which means you’re likely to be calling the shots when it comes to your eating habits, sleeping habits and most of all, your health care.

But your health does not go on hiatus once you go to college. In fact, the stresses of studying, making new friends/roommates and possibly having to work to support yourself while attending classes can put health care on the back burner for some students. Ironically, this is when you need to attend to your health the most!

Your brain needs to be in top form to get the most out of your classes and to participate in activities that might not have been available to you in high school.

First things first: get that health center card! The glorious thing about college whether it’s local, private, four-year or 10-year is that it most likely offers student health care at a steeply discounted price. In many cases, it’s even mandatory and included in the price of tuition. Institutions of higher learning aren’t stupid! They know that a healthy student body leads ultimately leads to on-time graduating classes!

Don’t just use the resource when you’re sick – find out what kind of nutritional programs, referral services and prevention programs it offers. Stop in every once in awhile and pick up any literature it might offer. Even if the health care program at your school is not equivalent to the Mayo Clinic, they most likely have the latest information on health trends, drug interactions or breakthroughs and mental health.

And speaking of mental health: a lot of literature and well-meaning family and friends will advise you to “avoid the freshman fifteen” pounds or “don’t drink too much alcohol.”
This is truly good advice, but studies have shown that more importantly, a new student doesn’t have the social and emotional support when they first start college, or even later in their college career.

Make it a priority to find and establish a network of friends, teachers and counselors – maybe it’s colleagues if you’re working your way through school – who can provide a strong shoulder to lean on during good, bad and just plain different times. Having someone to talk to and give advice is key to feeling secure and building self-esteem during tough test times, relationships and financial crunches.

Don’t hesitate to seek out a spiritual outlet, whether it’s a church group or synagogue, or something non-denominational like yoga or a meditation class.

Back to the weight issue: the temptation to stock up on cheap, carbohydrate and preservative-laden foods has always been a hallmark of college careers. It seems much easier to order a pizza or chow down on freeze-dried noodles during those late-night study binges!

It’s time to move on to the 21st century. Fresh fruits and vegetables are usually just as inexpensive, if not more so, than pre-packaged foods. Farmers markets are increasingly available in urban and rural areas, and make for a nice study break in addition to acquiring tasty new foods. There’s too many “quick cooking” shows, cookbooks and online recipes to have an excuse to not take 10 minutes to throw a healthy meat or vegetarian dish together. And if you’re smart enough to get into college, you’re smart enough to know this will give you more energy to study and avoid getting sick or overweight!

Because let’s face it – freedom is only a thrill if you’re healthy enough to enjoy it!

10 Things College Professors Will Expect From You

college professor 10 Things College Professors Will Expect From YouCollege professors are regular people just like anyone else. They are commonly stereotyped as stuffy, overly academic, egocentric, brainiacs with a love for tweed jackets with patches on the elbows, and long wooden tobacco pipes. Or maybe they are categorized as eccentrics. Ever hear of the nutty professor?

Again, college professors are people just like me or you; however, there will be certain expectations college professors will have from their students, just like bosses will expect their workers to perform certain tasks, professors will expect of their students certain things. Here are 10 things college professors will expect from their students.

Show up for every class. This is a no-brainer. You have to attend classes. That's why you're in college. Every class is important or the professor would not create a syllabus outlining what will be discussed on a particular day.

Don't be late. There's nothing more disrespectful than walking into the classroom late. Granted, college is not like high school where you will get detention if you're late, but this is not an excuse. Don't disrupt the class by walking in late. Don't be that guy. Get to class on time.

Complete the assignments. If a professor hands out an assignment, he expects you to not only complete it but to finish it on time. A professor does not want to hear any excuses.

Participate in class discussions. A college professor expects an open dialogue with their students. A professor does not show up for class to listen to themselves speak.

Respect the classroom. Don't come to class and pass notes around. Or talk to your neighbors over the professor's lectures. Don't eat in class. Or if you do, it's understandable if you didn't have time to grab a bite during your hectic day, don't disrupt the class with your gorging.

Don't plagiarize. This is the worse thing in the world a student can do. No matter what, do not steal from someone else. If you have an assignment, do it yourself, even if it is riddled in errors. Professors are brighter than you think. They'll know if you're stealing.

Read everything assigned. Again, if a professor assigns something to read, they will expect you to complete all the reading, not some of the reading, not just the first ten pages, they'll expect you to complete all of the reading.

Take advantage of office hours. A professor has office hours for one reason: to make themselves available to the student. They are there for you and they expect you to use that time to communicate. Talk to a professor during their office hours, not after class.

Feel free to ask for help. Don't be shy. A college professor expects you to ask for something if you need it. If you don't understand something, ask for help.

Feel free to ask for a letter of recommendation. It is a college professor's duty to write letters of recommendation for their students. It is part of their job description. They expect to write these letters and will do it for you, as long as they feel you're worthy of recommendation. If you act in accordance with what a professor expects, then they would be a bad professor indeed to give you a bright letter of recommendation.

Participate in Active Study

Participate in Active StudyTo succeed and get good grades in college, you're going to have to study. Good study habits can be the difference between graduating with honors and struggling to graduate at all. Your best chance of successful studying will come if you participate in active study, rather than passive study. This means making a forward, positive effort to absorb the information, rather than sitting back, letting it wash over you, and hoping something sticks. Here is a plan for how you can participate in active study.

Engage the Material

When you study, don't just read the required chapters, close the book, and move on to the next thing. Ask yourself questions. When you finish a chapter, ask yourself to summarize what you just read. If there is something you don't understand, don't just give up. Read it again and try to work out what you are missing. Often confusion results simply from careless reading, and a paragraph you may have glossed over may reveal all. If you still don't understand something, get help. Figure out the right questions to ask your professor to illuminate the material for you.

Take Good Notes

When you take notes, you make the learning process interactive. As you commit the information to paper, you are giving yourself an additional chance to absorb the material. When you read these notes later, you are giving yourself yet another opportunity to integrate what you have learned.

Participate in Class

Yet another way to make the learning process interactive and to be an active participant. When you turn the studied material into a discussion with your professor, you bring it to life, and may be inspired to look at it in ways you wouldn't come up with from simply reading it out of a book. If you could learn most efficiently simply from the text, you wouldn't need to attend class at all. The classroom environment is a valuable resource. Use it to your advantage.

Go To Office Hours

Just as your classroom is a resource, so is your professor. Visit the professor during office hours to ask those questions that you didn't have time to ask in class, or to ask questions that you think may be specific to your understanding of the material and not of as much interest to fellow students. You can learn a great deal about the subject matter when working one on one, and your professor will appreciate your taking such an interest.

Passive studiers are taught, active studiers learn. When you determine to participate in active study, you are giving yourself a huge advantage over fellow students. You will learn more, learn it more quickly, and enjoy the material much more when studying actively. Give it a shot.

It’s Exam Day – Make it a Stress Free Success

marking3 Its Exam Day Make it a Stress Free SuccessIt’s exam day. But it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Most people envision the day of the big test – SAT, ACT, GRE, etc. – as a day of stress, pain, anguish, anxiety, and all kinds of other intense, not-so-happy emotions. Put such nonsense out of your mind. Test taking, like any life event, is exactly what you make of it. And there’s plenty of ways in which you can prepare beforehand in order to make exam go beautifully. Those who wind up stressed out and landing less than stellar test results made one huge universal flaw: they didn’t prepare. Don’t make the same mistake on your big day.

You’ve already studied the course material, and have likely poured hours into the process of memorizing the required information. But on the day of the test itself, there’s still more prep work to take on if you want to be hugely successful.

First, sleep. Don’t just grab a few nervous hours of shut-eye, ensure that you get at least eight hours of restful slumber, and you’ll already be ahead of the game. Try and avoid any usage of sleeping aids, as they can make you unnecessarily groggy when you awake. Just get to bed early and relax – if you’re already studied your materials, there’s no reason to fret.

When you awake, be sure and have a healthy, balanced breakfast. Your brain and body need food to function at its peak, so grab a good meal, and do so in a peaceful environment. Envision yourself at the end of the exam, feeling fantastic about your efforts. Setting a strong and positive intention for the day, and feeling truly confident in your abilities to ace the test are just as critical as the tangible sustenance you consume. It’s been shown in many medical studies that positive thinking and maintaining a true belief that you will be successful in your endeavors create a very powerful force. Feed your body, brain, and spirit, and you’re already on the way to success.

It’s also advisable to piece together all the materials you’ll need for the exam the night before. Books, papers, pens and pencils, lucky charms; anything you don’t want to forget as you race out the door should be accounted for prior to sleep time. When the pressure hits in the AM, you’ll be very glad all your ducks were in a row, and it may even help you sleep easier. Map out the directions from your residence to the exam location. Know exactly what room and instructor you’ll need to report to. These things sound elementary and simple, but you’ll likely be dealing with a great deal of stress on the big day, so forgetfulness on these little details is a high possibility. Preparation the night before can eliminate any last minute mistakes.

Lastly, don’t, under any circumstances, wait until the night before or day of the exam to complete your studies. Any information you attempt to obtain at the eleventh hour in this fashion is likely to never fully be processed anyway, and trying to get in last minute memorizations is a sure fire way to send yourself into the anxiety stratosphere. Take the time to study in a stress free atmosphere long before the actual test time.

If you’ve allotted plenty of time for studying the materials, get a good night’s sleep, and nourish your mind, body, and spirit on the day of the exam, you’re giving yourself the absolute best opportunity to land an awesome score. Missing the beat on any of these essential elements will just add undo pressure, and increase your chances at a lower test score not because you’re not intelligent, but because you simply didn’t prepare. Let your score reflect your knowledge, not your lack of preparation.
